From the Great Migration to the striking emerald vegetation, there are plenty of reasons to visit Kenya. But when is the best time? Thanks to its diverse geography and a variable climate, most Kenyan destinations are at their peak between the months of January and March, although Kenya is considered to be a year-round destination for both beach vacations and safari trips.
What is the Best Month to Go on an African Safari?
Between June and October there is virtually no rain and therefore, these months are considered to be the best when looking at when to book a Kenya African safari.
January
As it’s the height of the Kenyan summer, January is a great time to visit the East African destination, particularly if you’re travelling to the coast. Temperatures are high, whilst the landscape is luscious, you will find this an optimum time to spot wildlife on the ground and from the air.
February
With a very similar climate to January, the month of February is another excellent time to visit Kenya. There may be the odd shower, but the weather is mostly dry and long grass spans across the landscape.
March
During this month, wildlife viewing is still good, despite the increase in rainfall as Kenya heads towards the ‘long rains’ season.
April – May
At this time of year, Kenya is very much in the ‘long rains’ period, as well as the Indian Ocean coastline featuring hot and wet weather conditions. As a result, it’s not the ideal time to visit.
June
Whilst the nights are still at a cool temperature, the rain has usually subsided and the long dry season is not far away. Many suggest that this is a beautiful time to visit the country of Kenya, and looking forward to welcoming the Great Migration into the Masai Mara.
July
The initial herds begin to arrive into the Maisa Mara from neighbouring Tanzania, and peak travel season is on the horizon. Weather wise, the climate is dry with occasional showers remaining a possibility, but overall, the month of July is a good time to visit Kenya.
August
Peak travel season has arrived, with mostly dry weather and great game viewing to be taken advantage of. The Mara and Talek Rivers welcome crossings of wildebeests and zebras, as the height of the Great Migration is in full flow.
September
Another mostly dry month, September’s game viewing in the Mara is great, making this a good month to visit Kenya.
October
Often a quieter time for travellers, October still offers fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities, with the migratory herds leaving the Mara. The resident populations remain and the beaches are still worth making the most of. Overall October is a great time to visit Kenya, especially for those looking to avoid the crowds.
November
There are often a number of good deals to take advantage of at this time of year, with the short rains beginning to fall, but the hotter weather on its way.
December
Many northern camps are closed at this time of year, and the weather can be very wet but hot. Game viewing that features high bird numbers is still very good at this time of year.
