What To Pack On Safari: Are You Prepared for Adventure?

Safari Packing List

Before flying away on an African safari, it makes sense to get organised and think about what you need to pack ahead of travel. Ensuring you have the correct clothing, toiletries, documentation, and equipment is key to having an enjoyable holiday. In this article, we outline the most important things to pack when travelling on Safari to major destinations like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.

Documents

The correct documentation is crucial, otherwise your dream safari cannot go ahead. You will require an in-date passport and airline boarding card in order to board the flight and pass through customs. Travelling to certain areas of Africa will require vaccination certificates from your doctor. You will also need the correct visa documentation to prove you are entitled to travel to the country you intend to visit.

Clothing

Try to pack a mixture of clothing for warmer and cooler weather. Robust walking shoes are recommended. In some seasons, the weather can be cold at night, so pack a few sweaters so you can layer up if needed. A light rain jacket is essential. Non-bright colours like khaki and green are your best bet and allow you to blend in. Avoid camo patterns since they are illegal in some African countries. Don’t forget to bring a suitable hat and a pair of sunglasses to protect you from the sun.

laundry

Laundry

The laundry facilities available will likely be limited, especially once on location at a remote camp. Although some providers offer a basic laundry service, this only extends to washing a couple of items. It is recommended you bring enough clothing to cover the majority of your stay. You may be able to wash some of your own clothes. Check with your tour operator prior to travel to find out all the facts.

toiletries

Toiletries & medicines

You should pack a selection of toiletries, including toothpaste and a toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, shower gel, plus high strength sunscreen and protective lip balm. Insect repellent is recommended, especially those with anti-mosquito properties. If you take prescription medication, bring everything you need, plus a full list of the medicines you take with their generic drug name. In the case that you take controlled drugs, an official note from your doctor is recommended.

essentials

Extra essentials

Be sure to bring other equipment, such as binoculars and a quality camera. Bags made from soft materials are more suitable than hard rectangular suitcases. This is because they take up less room and weight on lightweight aircraft. Optional extras include a torch or head flashlight, camera tripod, chargers, and memory cards.

plastic bags

Avoid use of plastic bags

Please be aware that in Kenya, the use of plastic bags was outlawed in August 2017. You are no longer permitted to travel into the country with any plastic bags, such as for toiletries or for storing used clothing. Instead, use paper or canvas bags. While the authorities typically target commercial retailers, it is best to stay on the right side of the law. This will ensure you avoid any unnecessary fines.
